Canvey Island 1 Dagenham & Redbridge 2
Dagenham and Redbridge's Craig Mackail-Smith struck late to earn his side all three points against Canvey Island.
Last season's leading scorer headed home in the 78th minute to move Dagenham to ninth in the Conference, while Canvey dropped to 15th.
Canvey had started the brightest and Tony Roberts was called upon to make an excellent save to deny Lee Boylan in the early sparring.
The former West Ham United youth player looked to add to the two goals he scored against strugglers Burton Albion the previous week.
But Lee Goodwin opened the scoring in the 26th minute when he converted Chris Moore's cross to give Dagenham the advantage.
Glen Southam then went close for Canvey when he hit the woodwork before Jeff Minton equalised four minutes after half time.
Minton converted a spectacular free-kick after Kezie Ibe was fouled. Minton's effort left Roberts rooted to the spot to level the scores.
Canvey pressed for the winner, but they were left counting the cost of their attacking tactics when Mackail-Smith headed in Sam Saunders' cross against the run of play and brought his season's tally to three.
It was sweet revenge for Dagenham, who were on the wrong end of a 4-2 hiding in the same fixture last season.
Having bounced back from Saturday's 0-2 defeat against Scarborough, John Still's men are now looking to mount a serious challenge at the top of the Conference.
Meanwhile, Jeff King will be hoping that Canvey continue their good start to the season and enjoy an easier ride this season.
However, they will need to be at their best when they face high-flying Kidderminster in the Conference on Friday.
