Spot-on Howe denies Daggers
Rene Howe`s controversial second-half penalty earned Torquay a battling point from a 1-1 draw at Dagenham & Redbridge.
Daggers got the breakthrough they deserved for a dominant first-half performance after 25 minutes.
Jon Nurse in space on the right picked out the unmarked Sam Williams inside the penalty area, and his looping header sailed over Bobby Olejnik.
Danny Green almost added a second just before half-time, latching onto Gavin Tomlin's through pass only to see his low effort comfortably parried away by the busy Olejnik.
The visitors were much improved after half-time and Daggers keeper Chris Lewington was called upon several times to preserve his side's lead.
Howe, Ian Morris and Eunan O'Kane all had efforts on target but were denied by the young stopper.
However, Lewington was powerless to stop the equaliser.
With 11 minutes remaining, Mark Arber conceded a penalty for a foul on debutant substitute Billy Bodin, on loan from Swindon, although the Daggers skipper felt the foul had been committed outside the area.
Nevertheless, Howe sent Lewington the wrong way from the spot to earn his side a well-deserved draw.
