It was a case of role reversal at the Glyn Hopkin Stadium.
Last week on Boxing Day Dagenham & Redbridge hit two late goals to beat Gravesend & Northfleet 3-1. However, Liam Daish's side hit two late goals of their own to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Both sets of supporters were given an extra half hour to get over the new year hangovers as both teams hardly threatened to get the ball into the opposition penalty areas.
Eventually the crowd were awoken from their slumbers just after the half hour as what seemed to be a normal 50-50 challenge between Anwar Uddin and Bobby Bowry exploded into a full 20man skirmish.
The referee restored order without having to show a yellow card. Uddin hit the free-kick wide, while Paul Bruce produced the best bit of skill during the first period. The midfielder struck a volley from fully 20 yards and was unlucky to see the ball curl just wide.
Fortunately the game got a lot better during a second half that saw Dagenham take the lead on 60 minutes. The goal came from the left boot of Bruce who conjured a magnificent free-kick from 25 yards that never left the top corner.
The home side could have increased their advantage further. Chris Moore with a low cross found his strike partner Paul Benson, whose instant shot rolled wide of the target.
The visitors only emerged as an attacking in the final quarter of the game. Daggers keeper Tony Roberts made low saves to deny both Richard Hodgson and Omari Coleman.
The equaliser arrived on 83 minutes as Ross Smith headed home an Andy Drury corner to give the away supporters belief that an unlikely victory could emerge.
That win did happen courtesy of a goal in the third minute of added time.
The referee awarded Gravesend a free-kick just outside the penalty area. Bradley Johnson hit a magnificent shot and although Tony Roberts got a hand to it, the ball ended up in the back of the net to give the visitors a perfect start to 2006.
