Grays Athletic continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 victory over near neighbours Dagenham and Redbridge. The result means that Grays maintain their position at the top of the Nationwide Conference table.

The crowd of over 2,000 created a terrific atmosphere at the Glyn Hopkin Stadium, and they witnessed the visitors having the first effort on goal as Aaron McLean headed straight at Tony Roberts in the Dagenham goal. Dennis Oli also tested the Daggers keeper with a right-footed shot that Roberts was equal to.

At the other end the Daggers' best effort of the opening period came from Chris Moore. Moore's glancing header fell just wide of the post, after the striker had latched onto a Danny Foster cross.

The moment of creativity that the game needed came seven minutes before the break. John Nutter sent over a cross into the area, which Stuart Thurgood latched onto. The Grays captain hit a low shot from ten yards that found the bottom corner of the net.

The Daggers couldn't have wished for a better start to the second half as they scored an equaliser three minutes after the re-start. The visitors were unable to clear a long Lee Goodwin throw and Moore was on hand to fire his side back on level terms.

It was Grays that responded to the goal the better and for most of the second half it was they who looked the more likely to grab a winner. Thurgood's corners were causing tremendous difficulties to the home defence and both Oli and McLean wasted chances from close range while Nutter also went close with a long-range shot.

Grays had to wait until the 88th minute before they got their deserved winner and it came from another corner, this time from Bertie Brayley. The home side were unable to clear their lines and it was left to central defender Stev Angus to bundle the ball home from close range to send the travelling supporters home happy.
