Dagenham & Redbridge tightened their grip on second spot in the Nationwide Conference table as they capitalised on a series of defensive errors by Weymouth to clinch a five-goal thriller at the Victoria Ground.

After losing to Yeovil Town in midweek, a defeat that ended a seven-match unbeaten run, Dagenham bounced back in style, front-man Paul Benson turning in a man-of-the-match performance as he found the net once and forced two own goals with an electrifying display.

Weymouth boss Garry Hill, who guided Dagenham to five successive top-five finishes in the Conference during his spell in charge between 1999 and 2004, could only watch helplessly as the Daggers, clearly brimming with determination, tore into his side from the first whistle.

With five minutes gone, Dagenham forward Benson collected a loose ball in midfield, drove through the Terras defence and fired a diagonal shot past goalkeeper Aaron Lee-Barrett that bounced off defender Simon Downer and into the unguarded net.

An own goal to the good, Dagenham did not let up. Minutes later they threatened to extend their lead when a defensive slip allowed Craig Mackail-Smith a free pop at goal. The striker shot wastefully over the bar, but almost made amends a few moments later when he broke down the left to force a good save from Lee-Barrett.

With the pressure mounting and Benson's pace forcing the Weymouth defence to work overtime, it was only a matter of time before the Daggers scored again. The breakthrough came just before the half hour, Lee-Barrett fumbling Lee Elam's hopeful ball forward to leave Benson with a tap-in.

Benson was once again in the thick of the action for Dagenham's third, his looming presence forcing a mistake from Steve Tully as the Weymouth right-back struggled to head clear Sam Saunders' precise far-post cross.

To their credit, Weymouth did not let their heads drop and six minutes from the interval captain Ben Smith pulled a goal back with a header. Minutes later Smith almost scored again, forcing a good close-range save from Tony Roberts.

The Weymouth fightback continued to gather momentum after the break, Raphael Nade shooting wide from range before Chukki Eribenne went close.

Downer almost made up for his earlier mistake when he headed onto the roof of the net, but moments later he was withdrawn as Hill switched to a three-man defence in an attempt to capitalise on the visitors' momentum.

For a time the tactical switch seemed to be working, Weymouth dominating possession as they pressed forward in search of another goal. But a lack of cutting edge in the final third was a constant problem, with Elam particularly guilty.

With 15 minutes to go, the Weymouth winger was put through by a sweeping ball from midfield, but he hesitated inside the box and the moment was gone.

It proved a costly mistake, as the game quickly took another dramatic twist. Abdul El-Kholti brought down Mackail-Smith on the edge of the area and, to the home fans' delight, the referee pointed to the spot.

Weymouth quickly made their displeasure known, and amid the melee that followed Nade was booked, a decision the striker greeted with sarcastic applause that earned him a second yellow and an early bath.

With Weymouth down to ten men, Daggers midfielder Glen Southam stepped up to take the penalty, neatly converting into the bottom left-hand corner.

From there the game was up for Weymouth, as the Daggers re-established control to snuff out any lingering danger and complete a miserable afternoon for Hill.
