A controversial re-taken penalty gave Farnborough Town the win over a battling Dagenham & Redbridge side.

The hosts created the first opening when former Brentford midfielder Jay Smith, on his debut, forced Daggers keeper Tony Roberts in to a good save.

Craig Mackail-Smith then fired wide after beating Farnborough defender Mark Rooney. The lively striker was in action again minutes later with a long-range effort that flew just over the bar.

As both sides looked to open the scoring, Gary Holloway's cross-cum-shot was going off target as Stephen Hughes unsuccessfully tried to get a head on the effort.

The visitors then won a free-kick and Paul Bruce's curling 25-yard effort forced a fine save from the young Borough keeper Craig Holloway.

The shot-stopper was in action again minutes later with a fine reaction save to deny Mackail-Smith.

In the 33rd minute Borough opened the scoring when Tony Taggart's inswinging corner was dropped into his own net by Roberts - a repeat of Borough's goal here last season.

Mackail-Smith had a long-range effort that went straight to Holloway as the home side stayed ahead at the break.

The Daggers searched for the equaliser in the second period as the busy Mackail-Smith headed Mark Janney's cross towards goal but Craig Holloway was on hand to collect.

At the other end Taggart's effort was saved before a Sacha Opinel free-kick flew wide.

As the visitors looked for the equaliser, Tony Boot skewed his shot horribly wide after shooting unnecessarily early.

However, they found the leveller when substitute Jack Midson side-footed a cross from Lee Flynn home.

As the game looked set for a 1-1 draw Borough were awarded a penalty when Roberts brought down Gary Holloway.

Taggart stepped up to take the spot-kick but the keeper saved his effort. Two minutes later referee Mr Kinesley ordered a re-take after speaking to his assistant.

This time Taggart made no mistake and Roberts was given a second yellow card amid the celebrations and was sent off as Borough stole all three points.
