Junior McDougald's two-goal blast secured a point for Dagenham & Redbridge after the visitors handed Halifax a three-goal start.

McDougald pounced in 64 minutes after Halifax keeper Tom Morgan dropped Mark Janney's left-wing cross at his feet and nine minutes from time McDougald tied the scores when he ran on to a Paul Terry through ball and rounded Morgan into the empty net.

Dagenham could even have snatched a victory in the third minute of injury time when McDougald was clear down the left, but his cross was hacked to safety by Adam Quinn before Dagenham striker Steve West could latch on to it.

Dagenham, who were just pipped to promotion to the Football League last season, started the game sluggishly and their failure to cope with set-pieces cost them dear.

Town midfielder Charlie Hartfield's inswinging corner on 24 minutes evaded the visitors defence and was headed in by Lewis Killeen. It was KilleenÂ’s first goal for the club after joining Town on loan from Sheffield United.

Three minutes later the Dagenham defence went missing again when Hartfield banged over a free-kick from the left. Killeen missed the ball at the near post but Ian Fitzpatrick was on hand to put Halifax 2-0 up.

Hartfield, who joined the Shaymen on a non-contract terms from the Blades, made it 3-0 on 34 minutes from a Craig Midgley corner. It was Hartfield's second goal in a week after he bagged the winner against nine-man Stevenage last Saturday.

But Halifax fans have got used to seeing their team self-destruct and it was clear that an easy win for the home side was just too good to be true.

The Shaymen let Dagenham back into it just before half time when Hartfield spoiled an otherwise superb individual display by something of an attempted clearance on to the shins of West. The ball hit the ground and then looped over Morgan and into the net.

The second half started quietly and Halifax appeared to have overcome the worst of DagenhamÂ’s pressure when Morgan's error allowed them to pull another goal back.

Town boss Chris Wilder was, however, not too upset about his side’s capitulation. Wilder said: “Dagenham have a massive reputation and are rightly favourites for promotion this term. We thoroughly matched them and can take heart from our performance.

“We've still only lost one game at home all season, we’re unbeaten in eight games and there is not much to be too disappointed about in that.”
