Daggers manager Garry Hill stunned the Nationwide Conference world by announcing that he was quitting the club after five years.

Hill said immediately after seeing his side miss a catalogue of golden chances: "I need a fresh challenge. I feel that I have taken the club as far as I can after having outstanding FA Cup runs and been runners-up in the Conference." He said he had told the board of directors that he would be leaving at the end of the season because he wanted to give them time to find a replacement.

"April 17 will be a very sad day for me because I shall miss a lot of friends connected with the club and in the football world," he added.

Both teams should have found the net on several occasions in an action-packed game, but keepers Leigh Walker and Tony Roberts repeatedly earned applause for a catalogue of saves.

Roberts dived full length at the feet of Scarborough's Chris Senior in what was to prove to be the first of a chain of chances for the Daggers who twice hit the woodwork but repeatedly failed in front of goal.

Hill said he had been disappointed that his side had not gone home with three points but was consoled by the fact that they had now gone five games without defeat.

"There was certainly no lack of commitment by the players." he added.

Scarborough too had good opportunities to find the net with Mark Quayle twice going close within five minutes in the first half while at the other end Paul Bruce raised the Daggers' hopes with a spectacular volley which Walker did well to save.

The game gathered pace after the break with Scarborough's Senior repeatedly testing Roberts and Clint Marcelle shooting twice on the run only to see his efforts saved on the line.

Scarborough manager Russell Slade said: "After three games in less than five days, I am shattered and so are the players.

"But today's game was full of grit and determination - there was a lot of honest endeavour.

"We made some great chances in a game in which Dagenham would never have had a better opportunity to beat us when we were so exhausted.

"But we did squander possession which cost us full points."
